- My main scholarly interest is reconstructing the
families of early colonial South Carolina and
finding their West Indian and European origins.
It has been estimated that nearly half of the
immigrants to the new colony in its first three
decades were from Barbados. However, there are so
many early families that have not been adequately
studied, it is hard to know for certain. I hope
to help fill this gap.

- Toussiger Genealogy
- Stephen Toussiger of South Carolina and Some
of his Descendants is the working title of a
manuscript that is nearly completed. This was my
compiled genealogy project in my application for
certification. I hope to submit it to a journal
by the end of this year (just need to tie up some
of those nagging loose ends...).
-
- Paty Genealogy
- Theophilus Paty of Barbados and Carolina and
Some of his Descendants is the working title
of a manuscript currently under development.
Theophilus Paty was in Barbados by 1656 and
migrated to Carolina by 1678. He may have been
the person of this name baptized in Yorkshire in
1632.
-
- Davis Genealogy
- Capt. William Davis of Barbados and Carolina:
Too Many Pieces for a Single Puzzle (Or Even Two)
is the working title for another manuscript
currently under development. This exploration of
the identity of the Capt. William Davis who was
the father-in-law of Gov. Robert Gibbes of
Carolina discovers that the standard accounts of
him contain many errors, and in fact, combine
several men named William Davis into one.
- Burnham Notes
- Some Notes on the Thomas Burnhams of Barbados
is the working title for a brief article
identifying various men of that name in Barbados
in response to an article in The American
Genealogist.
-
- St. Amand Genealogy
- Capt. John Alexander St. Amand of St.
Domingue and Charleston, SC is the working
title for a manuscript that is largely completed
concerning Capt. St. Amand (1791-1842) and
several generations of his descendants in South
Carolina.
- Genealogical &
Biographical Compendium of Early Carolina
- The working title for a planned multi-volume work
on the early settlers of South Carolina (and
including the failed Clarendon colony that was
located in present day North Carolina). I have
gathered an extensive amount of data in my files,
but this is a project that is many years from
publication!
-
- John Stevens Family
- Extensive research has been conducted on John
Stevens (c1720-1772), deputy receiver-general and
deputy post-master of Charleston and secretary to
His Majesty's deputy post-master general for the
Southern District of North America. Localities of
study include England, Georgia, South Carolina,
St. Kitts, and Jamaica. This is another project
for future publication.
-
- James Clelland (? -
1817) of the Forks of Cheat, Monongalia County,
West Virginia and Some of his Descendants
- A book-length compiled genealogy of James
Clelland and his family involving people
throughout northern West Virginia, western
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and other points
west. I have gathered an enormous amount of
information on many of these Clellands, but there
is still much research left to be done.
-
- Salley Bibliography
- I am trying to compile a bibliography of the
complete writings of South Carolina historian and
documentary editor Alexander S. Salley, Jr. When
I reach a point of reasonable comprehensiveness,
I will post it to this site.
