In preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City is catching up on three decades of needed road improvements. Because of this, I-15 through Salt Lake City, and many of the roads that pass over or under I-15, are either entirely closed or closed for part of the day. The directions below are intended to avoid all closures, no matter what the hour. It will often be possible to find faster routes, but a native guide is strongly advised for such routefinding. All of these routes were vetted on September 18 and 19, 2000.

Some traveling across the country from the east have a choice of which Interstate to use -- I-70, I-80, or I-90. (For example, Denver area folks can go north to Cheyenne, WY, and then west on I-80, or west on I-70 to Green River, UT, and then north on US 6 and I-15.) If you have such a choice, taking I-80 will take you through the least construction and congestion coming into Salt Lake City. Avoiding the construction and congestion can be worth as much as an hour's travel time, and will preserve much sanity.

• From the North:
  1. Take I-15 south to Utah exit 316, which is the I-215 West exit.
  2. After getting onto I-215, take the first exit, which is exit 28, Redwood Road.
  3. Turn left (south) onto Redwood Road. Proceed about 4.4 miles to the fifth light, which will be North Temple.
  4. Turn left (east) onto North Temple. Proceed on North Temple, which will take you over an overpass straddling a rail yard. After the overpass, proceed to the third signal, which will be West Temple.
  5. Turn right (south) onto West Temple. Proceed on West Temple through seven lights. The seventh light will be 600 South.
  6. Immediately after crossing 600 South, you will pass a Sinclair station and a catering business on the right. Turn into the next driveway on the right, which will take you around to the south side of the WestCoast Salt Lake Hotel, the side closest to the event center.
• From the South:
  1. Take I-15 north to Utah exit 293, Bangerter Highway (Utah Highway 154).
  2. Turn left onto the Bangerter Highway. The highway tends westward at first, and even turns briefly southward. Fear not, it will turn dead north soon enough. Proceed on the Bangerter Highway about 22 miles. (There are mileposts.)
  3. Take the exit for I-80 and North Temple. The fork that goes to North Temple is clearly marked, and that's the one you want. You will soon find yourself going east on North Temple.
  4. Proceed on North Temple, which will take you over an overpass straddling a rail yard. After the overpass, proceed to the third signal, which will be West Temple.
  5. Turn right (south) onto West Temple. Proceed on West Temple through seven lights. The seventh light will be 600 South.
  6. Immediately after crossing 600 South, you will pass a Sinclair station and a catering business on the right. Turn into the next driveway on the right, which will take you around to the south side of the WestCoast Salt Lake Hotel, the side closest to the event center.
• From the East:
  1. Take I-80 west to Utah exit 124, State Street/US 89.
  2. Turn right (north) onto State Street. Proceed on State Street to the first light, which is 2100 South.
  3. Turn left (west) onto 2100 South. Proceed on 2100 South to the second light, which is West Temple.
  4. Turn right (north) onto West Temple. Proceed on West Temple about 2 miles, through five lights. The fifth light is 700 South.
  5. Very shortly after crossing 700 South, you will see a small store called "British Pantry" on the left. Turn into the driveway on the left immediately after British Pantry, which will take you around to the south side of the WestCoast Salt Lake Hotel, the side closest to the event center.
• From the West:
  1. Take I-80 east to Utah exit 115, the North Temple exit.
  2. After you exit I-80, there will be some forks. At each step, the fork for North Temple is clearly marked, and that's the one you want. You will soon find yourself going east on North Temple.
  3. Proceed on North Temple, which will take you over an overpass straddling a rail yard. After the overpass, proceed to the third signal, which will be West Temple.
  4. Turn right (south) onto West Temple. Proceed on West Temple through seven lights. The seventh light will be 600 South.
  5. Immediately after crossing 600 South, you will pass a Sinclair station and a catering business on the right. Turn into the next driveway on the right, which will take you around to the south side of the WestCoast Salt Lake Hotel, which is the side closest to the event center.
