Dr. Dale Ellis's Psychology and Personal Coaching Practice

About My Psychology Practice

I am a personal coach, psychologist, and wilderness guide. (You can click on to my other websites at the bottom of this page.) I have a psychology practice in Walnut Creek and see clients at the Quail Court office complex off of South Main. I work with adults, adolescents, couples, families and children. I see all ages and work with many different kinds of problems. In my work with adults I specialize in depression and anxiety disorders. I also use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), or Bilateral Processing, for a number of kinds of problems including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. With post-doctoral training in clinical child psychology, I also have a specialization in working with children and work with children as young as 2 1/2. At this age especially it is important to work with parents, and I often see very young children with their mothers or fathers. I help people who are dealing with challenging spiritual (transpersonal) experiences. I work with older patients in skilled nursing facilities and with the mentally retarded in group homes.

I also have a specialization in ecopsychology and an interest in the effect of the emerging new world view (a participatory world view) on psychotherapy. Ecopsychology is about our relationship with the Earth and it recognizes the healing potential of the natural world. I have incorporated healing methods from shamanic and indigenous cultures into my practice and use them when appropriate and requested.

PHILOSOPHY OF TREATMENT

I do not limit myself to a medical model where one must have a diagnosis before receiving help. There are many problems that are part of the normal process of living. Each era, each culture, has its particular stresses and challenges. For example, in Western Cultures we experience ourselves as separate from the natural world, we are confronted by cultural values of materialism and "success," and we are challenged by the emphasis on speed and rapidly changing technologies. Our personalities may or may not be a good fit with our culture. In addition, while our souls or spirit may be perfect, our personalities are not. I do not think I have ever met a perfect personality (except perfect in their imperfection). Our personalities are "works in progress" and bear the imprint of our childhood and life experience. What this means is that most of us will face challenges and problems throughout our lives. The truth is that life can be darned hard! It can range from joy and bliss that seems like Heaven to pain and suffering that seems like Hell. Most of us,at some point in our lives, will feel like we are barely hanging on. These are the times we need help. Sometimes it is important to diagnosis a particular "disorder," because of its implications for treatment. Many times, however, we need to recognize that depressions, anxieties, phobias, panic attacks and other symptoms, are ways that the psyche signals us that we need help. My intention is to help people cope better, improve self-esteem, reduce stress, improve relationships, change behavior and lifestyle, and make it through hard times and become stronger for it. I want to see people find love, joy, meaning, and fulfillment in their lives. While we may all be in a certain sense imperfect, we are all on the path to health and wholeness. It is my intent to help others on this path.

Dr. Ellis Welcomes New Clients

I understand that for many people it can be scary and difficult to take the step to begin counseling and psychotherapy. I am sensitive to this and to the importance of privacy and confidentiality in my work. I welcome new clients and patients and I want you to know that I will do my best to help you. I want a good working relationship with my clients and I want them to feel comfortable with me as they work to heal, grow, and overcome the challenges in their lives. I want to see my clients achieve the highest level of health as possible and to create lives of love, joy, meaning, and fulfilllment.
