POMPONIUS MELA HOME PAGE
Pomponius Mela was a Spaniard from Baetia in southern Spain who flourished in the first century AD. He wrote his Latin geography of the ancient world (De Situ Orbis) at the time of Claudius' invasion of Britain (AD 43-44). His work may have been used as source material by Pliny the Elder, amongst others.
The present edition is from Jac. Grovonius' edition of 1683, as revised with important additions by his son in 1748, and published as a small pocket edition (9cm x 14cm) in London in 1819, from which the present web site text is taken. Please note that a few place names in De Situ Orbis are in Greek; I have transcribed these into Roman characters and put them into italic font.
The De Situ Orbis in the Grovonius edition comprises three books, of 19, 7, and 10 chapters respectively, and a Name Index at the end of Book III. The average size of each chapter is about 4K, and the size of the Name Index is about 41K.
I have been informed (August 2000) by a correspondent (A T Young) that Mela's work is now available in Latin and English in the following recent editions:
Pomponius Mela
De Chorographia (translated by Paul Berry)
(Edwin Mellen Press, Lewiston, 1997)
Pomponius Mela's description of the world / [translated with an introduction by] F.E. Romer.
(U.of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1998)
My correspondent usefully comments, "The first book (trans. by Berry) has the Latin on the left pages, showing a facsimile of the 1642 edition of the work, in the fashion of the Loeb editions, but prettier. The translator remarks on the beautiful typography."
Although it is a pleasure to see minor authors such as Mela once again in print there are significant advantages in having them also available on the Web where they may be accessed in a machine-readable and searchable format.
