IN THE NEXT UPDATE:-
T
HE NILE CHALLENGE

One item remained for us from the 200th Anniversary celebrations, and that was the original idea of re-fighting the battle from the point at which Nelson's fleet entered the bay.

We were delighted when Deputy        Museum Director Colin White not only     issued "The Nile Challenge" to the Squadron to do just that, but recruited his own Band of Brothers to take the part of the Captains of the British Fleet.

The Band was led by Lord de Saumarez,  direct descendent of the captain of  the Orion, with solid representation from the Nelson Society and the 1805 club, and some willing wargamers from Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Members of the Squadron acted as First Lieutenants to the English Captains, relaying their orders into the computer system as each ship manoeuvred into battle against the anchored French fleet.

The battle took place in public on the 201st anniversary of the action (the 1st of August 1999), and will be reported in detail in the next update of the Squadron web-site.
