Two Choices

You can use WordPerfect's file dialogs to perform basic file opening or closing or you can use it as a full blown file management utility. You first need to decide how you want to use the file dialogs.

Regular or Super Grade

The file manager in WordPerfect 7, 8 and 9 comes in two grades -- regular and super. The regular version (non-enhanced) is the standard Windows 95 file dialog. It is available in all versions of WordPerfect 8 and 9 but only in certain patched versions of WordPerfect 7. The regular version was added in a patch to address a problem with long filenames on Novell networks and to allow users to more quickly open the file dialogs.

Deciding Which One

If you merely want the ability to open and close files, use the standard file dialogs because they are much quicker to open than the enhanced dialogs. If you use WordPerfect 7 on a  Novell Netware network with long file names enabled, you may want to use the standard dialogs to avoid the problem of opening a file or folder with a long name (more than 8 characters) located in a folder with a long name.

If you like easy access to QuickFinder and greater flexibility in viewing and managing your files, use the enhanced dialog boxes.

Whichever version you decide to use, I would suggest you read the section on the regular grade dialog box since just about everything in that section is also applicable if you use the enhanced dialog boxes.
