Frequently Asked Questions of Incoming Freshman

How do I join the team?
Southern Illinois Men's Lacrosse Club usually holds a callout in the first two weeks of each semester. Traditionally, the callout takes place on a week night in the big room of the SIUC Recreation Center. Once you get to campus, you can get the details by calling or visiting the Student Recreation Center, or by contacting the Club Sports Director (srav@siu.edu) , Shane Ravellette.. 618 453 1376

Are there tryouts?
No. Anyone who wants to play lacrosse can join the club. Of course we are a Men's TEAM, so sorry girls you have to watch us instead. You will, however, be required to pay club dues, which are around $40/semester or $70 if you pay for it all during the first semester. Dues are used to buy team equipment and pay for away tournament fees, etc.

What equipment do I need?
You will need to have your own stick. But some members may have extras. The club members maintains its own helmets, shoulder pads, gloves, and arm pads. Unfortunately, the club has limited funds to work with, and therefore has a limited supply of equipment. When participation is high, there is not enough equipment to go around. Should you choose to buy equipment before you come to school, make sure it will match the rest of the team! The team uniform is: *white* Cascade helmets, with black gloves and arm pads.

Can I watch the team when I visit campus?
Absolutely. During warm weather, our practice schedule is:
Mondays through Fridays-5-7 P.M. at the Lower Arena Playfields

If you would like to watch a Dawg game, please refer to our Calendar.

How will practice fit into my class schedule?
It may be possible to get a free time block as a new student. Talk to your counselor when you schedule your classes. If you fail to get a free time block, it is often possible to change sections within a course after the semester has begun. Even so, there are always club members who can't make every practice due to a course conflict.

How much time will I be spending on lacrosse?
When the weather is warm, practice is two hours every week day. Usually, 3-4 weekends are spent out of town during a semester. In addition, there is usually one fund raiser per semester, which will require a one-time commitment of 2-3 hours. The bottom line is: There is plenty of time to play lacrosse, and you will have a *lot* of time left over for school and other activities. Grades come first!!!!

Will there be extra costs, in addition to club dues?
Team members are required to pay for hotel rooms on trips. This is usually held to $5-10 per night, per person. You will also have to buy your own food on trips. Game shorts & Jerseys, which will be yours to keep, they are purchased once a year at about $15 for shorts and $20 for Jerseys.

We hope this has answered your concerns, and look forward to seeing you next year or semester.
