His road to the Majors;
Conine started out as a pitcher in college at UCLA. He later played for Baseball City and was drafted in the 58th round by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals started him out in Memphis where he soared and was brought up to play in 9 games for the Royals. He didn't do so well for the Royals so they sent him down to Omaha. He spent one and a half seasons there before he came back up to Kansas City in 1992. The Royals didn't see any more promise in Conine and let him go in the expansion draft. The Marlins chose him as their 11th pick in the expansion draft of 1993. He was placed third for Rookie of the Year voting that year behind Piazza and McMicheals. He would go on to lead the Marlins in most major batting catagories up until his off season in 1997. Conine was also the Marlin's All Star Game representative in 1994 and 1995. He didn't see any action in the '94 game but made up for it in next year's game by hitting a pinch hit, game winning, homerun in the 8th inning. He won All star Game MVP honors for that blast. 1997 was the year the Marlins won the World Series, but also marked the beginning of Conine's two off seasons. 1997 he was below average in almost every catagory. That year, after the season, Conine was dealt back to Kansas City in the Marlins fire sale. He struggled in 1998 and the Royals quickly traded him to the Orioles for two minor leaguers in 1999. Conine seemed to be in a deep slump in the early part of the '99 season, but broke out of it to finish his batting average above his career batting average. Jeff signed another contract with the Orioles even though he had two other offers. This year he seems to be his old self as he is batting well over .300 so far. He will have to battle with Baines and Clark for playing time, but seems to be getting the playing time he deserves.
